Any automobile car without a fuel pump will quickly starve the engine. A bad fuel pump on the other hand can kill the engine rapidly. Before doing any fuel pump replacement, inspect the fuses and relays first before getting started. Installing and replacing a fuel pump is not really a complicated task. Before getting started, here are the things that you will need for this operation.
- Fire Extinguisher
- New Fuel Line
- Replacement Fuel Pump
- Open End Wrench Set
- Phillips Head Screwdriver
- Flat Head Screwdriver
- Socket Set
Here is a step-by-step process in replacing the fuel pump:
1. Before starting the fuel pump replacement operation, safety should be considered first. Try to work on a well ventilated area, much better if the area is open. Make sure to have a fire extinguisher nearby.
2. Fuel pumps produces massive amount of fuel pressure to supply the electronic fuel injection of the system with lots of pressurized fuel. This massive pressure doesn’t go away after turning the engine off. So it’s essential to take a step to release the fuel pressure before removing the fuel pump from its situated location.
3. There are many types of fuel pumps today, for engines with fuel type pumps that mounts inside the fuel tank the procedure requires drivers to remove the pump from inside the car. Their access point is located underneath the backseat. There are also pumps whose access points are in the trunk usually fuel pumps located below the carpet.
4. After locating the fuel pumps, disconnect everything attached to it before separating it from the tank.
5. Now that everything can be seen clearly, the next step is to disconnect the fuel lines. For cars with an in-tank pump there will a separate line found on top of the pump that needs disconnecting first. For cars with an under car pump, a line in and a line out can be seen that also requires disconnecting. These two lines are known as the low and high pressure side of the pump.
6. To remove these lines, loosen the hose clamps that holds the low pressure side inside, after this loosen its fitting and then finally remove the lines.
7. Be sure to carry something on hand to catch leaking gas from the disconnected lines that might splash around and could create a fire hazard.
8. The last and final step is to detach the wires that give power to the fuel pump. Two wires are present here, one is positive and the other is ground. It’s a nice idea to make a note that will help differentiate one from the other.
9. After disconnecting and removing all of these, the next step is to place the fuel pump replacement. As the saying goes, installing is the opposite of removing so go ahead.
